How We Built Ube Latte From Dessert to Perfume - The Story Behind the Scent
Ube latte became a viral sensation for one reason: it's distinctive. Sweet enough to crave. Sophisticated enough to sip at 6 p.m. And unapologetically Pinoy. When we set out to make Ube Latte as a fragrance, we didn't want to recreate the drink; we wanted to convey the emotion of holding that purple cup. We transformed a dessert craze into a wearable memory.
Why Ube? Why Now?
Ube went from a Filipino staple to a global trend in 2023. But m

ost of the ube scents were not very good; they smelled like fake candy or cheap baking air. Our initial idea was to "What if we built this from the inside out?" What if we valued consistency more than flavor?
Ube latte is not just sweet. It's layered. You get earthiness from the tuber itself, creaminess from the milk, warmth from the roasted elements. We knew we needed a scent to reflect all of that – not just "ube = sweet." We wanted to build something that felt real, intentional, and worth your wrist space. It's layered. You have the earthiness of the tuber itself, the creaminess of the milk, and the warmth of the roasted ingredients. We knew we needed a fragrance that was all of those—not just "ube = sweet. "We set out to create something authentic, meaningful, and worth your wrist space.
Deconstructing the Perfect Cup
Top Notes Strategy
To begin, we brewed some white tea with saffron flower, a fragrant and somewhat meditative beverage. In the subtle, understated way that ube has, carrot seeds are earthy. Before you have that first drink, it's the quiet morning. With this introduction, Ube Latte takes on a more complex flavor rather than a sugary one right away. Ube has beneath its carrot seeds an earthiness that no one ever mentions. The morning is peaceful as we wait for our first drink. Ube Latte isn't just sweet at first; thanks to this introduction, it has a nuanced flavor.
Heart Notes Strategy
And that's the secret ingredient. An ube latte accord, a custom combination that catches sweetness without smelling fake, was created in collaboration with French fragrance houses.Toss in some almond-vanilla cream and roasted hazelnuts for that toasted, nutty warmth. How did it turn out? You encapsulate happiness in a bottle. Texture derived from almond-vanilla and depth from toasted hazelnuts. Their combined effect is like sipping a steaming mug of ube latte.
Base Notes Strategy
A soothing blend of gentle musk and oat milk. After a long day of testing, we finally settled on a musk that is neither fake nor soapy; rather, it is warm, creamy, and delicately clings to the skin. Inspired by specialty scents, the oat milk note gives the scent a delicate, powdery aftertaste reminiscent of the frothy foam on a hot latte. When worn together, they produce a dry-down that is comfortable enough to wear all day without restricting movement.
From Sketch to Shelf - Our Testing Process
Ube Latte was tested on over fifty individuals from Manila, Quezon City, and Cebu, and we found that it opened up more quickly in humid climates and had a more noticeable aroma; on cold days, the toasted hazelnut flavor remained longer. The skin chemistries of the participants were also varied. It opened more quickly and let the aroma through in humid climates. On colder days, the crispy hazelnut flavor remained for a while.
"It smells like my abuela's kitchen" (win) was the most common comment. It's a conscious choice; the statement "it's too gourmand for office wear" is valid. Moreover, we examined durability. For those who love oud: eight hours. When applied to those who frequently use new sprays: "Wow, it actually stays."
The most shocking thing was that people wanted to layer it. They hoped that Ube Latte would serve as a launching pad for something more contemporary or a capstone to something deeper. We knew we had produced something versatile when it worked nicely with other smells.
Built for Tropical Heat (Not Your Typical Gourmand)
Most gourmand fragrances feel heavy and suffocating in humidity. We reformulated twice to ensure Ube Latte felt fresh enough for 35 degrees Celsius afternoons but rich enough for evenings—the key: not overdoing the sweetness. The ube accord stays sophisticated. The white tea keeps it breathable.
This is a fragrance designed for someone in the Philippines - or anyone in tropical climates who thinks "expensive fragrance" shouldn't mean "heavy and cloying." We wanted Ube Latte to feel like an extension of you, not a cloud around you.
The result: a gourmand that doesn't feel suffocating. A creamy fragrance that breathes. A Filipino fragrance that feels globally sophisticated.
The Bigger Picture
Every time someone asks, "What are you wearing?" you get to tell this story. You get to rep a Filipino aesthetic at a global level. And you get to smell like you're having the best day of your life - even if it's just a Tuesday afternoon at your favorite cafe.
Ube Latte was tested on over 50 persons across Manila, Quezon City and Cebu. They experienced varying weather and had different skin chemistries. In humid climes it opened faster and the fragrance came through. On cold days, the toasted hazelnut stayed longer.
